Hiring – The Fantasy Timeline versus The Reality Timeline – Part 1

It’s the middle of Q2 and that key person for your organization has not been hired yet!!!

It’s the 30th April, tomorrow is the 1st May, the fifth month of 2024, I don’t know about you but I think once Q1 is over the year just flies around.  When you look at business targets and performance, the time to get everything done is precious.

One area that certainly can take more time than anticipated is hiring.

T – Talent, a member of your team is leaving, and in the middle of a very important project roll-out OR the project needs extra personnel with specific IT skills and project management experience with excellent communication skills ….

I – Immediate, you know the story, the skills are needed NOW, there is no time to waste, timelines have been agreed, key stakeholders have committed to the project and expect the project to be delivered on time and on budget, regardless of unexpected hiccups.

M – Measured you all know the saying ‘what gets measured gets done’ (Peter Drucker Management Guru originally said what gets measured gets managed).  The talent gap analysis clearly shows that there is a problem.  A gap in the skill set will mean time lost, poorer performance on rollout etc.,

E – Expectation, real or unrealistic expectations that this role can be filled quickly, painlessly, smoothly have yet to be discovered.

The time has come to agree a new job description (new skills might have to be added to an older job specification document) and initiate a job search through various channels as agreed internally.

In Part 2 later this week, lets look closer at the next phase of hiring, going out to market, screening, selection, interviewing, offer stage, notice periods and start date.
